Minister's remarks add to confusion, but Christians reject idea
By Hazlin Hassan, Malaysia Correspondent
KUALA LUMPUR - MINISTER in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri Aziz yesterday added further confusion to the 'Allah' controversy that has sparked religious tension in Malaysia.
He said that non-Muslims are allowed to use the word 'Allah' to refer to God in three states - Penang, Sabah and Sarawak - and the Federal Territories including Kuala Lumpur. This is because these states do not have Islamic-related enactments which ban non-Muslims from using the word, unlike other states.

| Sabah churches reject proposal |
 |
KOTA KINABALU - THE Sabah Council of Churches has rejected a proposal that the word 'Allah' can only be used by Christians in Sabah and Sarawak.
Council president Rev Jerry Dusing said it felt that Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz's suggestion was 'illogical, inconsistent and untenable for Christian communities of both states, especially those residing in the peninsula'.

| 8 held over church attacks |
 |
KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIAN police said on Wednesday they have arrested eight people over the firebombing of a church earlier this month, the first in a spate of attacks that have escalated ethnic tensions.
Federal criminal investigation chief Bakri Zinin said police were investigating whether the eight people were also linked to the attacks on 10 other churches, which were pelted with Molotov cocktails, stones and paint.

KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIAN police said on Friday they had arrested seven more people over a spate of attacks on churches that have escalated ethnic tensions.
The violence, which saw 11 churches and two Muslim prayer halls targeted, was triggered by a court ruling that overturned a government ban on non-Muslims using the word 'Allah' as a translation for 'God'.

Men aged 17-29 held in four raids in Perak
KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIAN police said on Friday they had arrested seven more people over a spate of attacks on churches that have escalated ethnic tensions in the country.
A total of 16 religious institutions nationwide have been hit by arson and vandalism since a court ruled last month that a Catholic newspaper had the right to use the word 'Allah' as a translation for 'God' in its Malay-language section. The ruling was suspended pending an appeal.

KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIAN police said three severed pigs' heads were found at two mosques on Wednesday, in the latest of a spate of attacks on places of worship that have escalated ethnic tensions.
National police chief Musa Hassan said one head was found in the grounds of the Masjid Taman Dato Harun in a Kuala Lumpur suburb and two others were left at the nearby Al Imam al Tirmizi mosque. The heads were from wild pigs commonly found in Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA last week detained 50 people under laws which allow for them to be held without trial, an advocacy group said on Wednesday.
The detentions come at a time of raised religious and ethnic tensions over the use of the word 'Allah' by Christians to denote their God in Malay language publications.
